woman smilingDo you picture pink gums and attached teeth floating in a cup next to your elder’s bed when someone mentions dentures in Chicago Loop? Believe it or not, it takes a little more maintenance than soaking your dental prosthetic to keep them durable over the years. Here are a few helpful practices to keep your dentures in good condition.

1.      Be sure to thoroughly clean your dentures.

Your prosthetic teeth should be treated in high regard, just like natural teeth. Dentures can still build up stains, tartar, and dangerous bacteria that will weaken them and your remaining natural teeth. To avoid putting yourself at risk for further dental problems, remove and brush your dentures with a soft toothbrush or a special denture cleaning brush. You can use regular hand soap, mild dishwashing detergent, or a mild toothpaste. Also, soak them at night in warm water to loosen debris.

2.      Pay attention to the rest of your body.

Even if you have complete dentures (full mouth of replacement teeth), it is still extremely important to care for your gums, soft tissues, and tongue. Whenever you remove your dentures, give your mouth a good rinse and then massage your gums with a washcloth or soft toothbrush. If you have partial dentures, it’s important to properly brush and floss your remaining natural teeth.

3.      Remember to be gentle with your dentures.

Since dentures are made with high-quality materials, it’s important to treat them as if they are very delicate. They are designed to last, but not if you’re extremely rough with them. When you’re cleaning your prosthetics, be sure to do so over a bowl of water or folded towel just in case they drop. Avoid using toothpicks or foreign objects when wearing them to avoid scratching the surfaces of your dentures.

4.      Keep all of your dental appointments.

Following the tips on this list are critical to the maintenance of your dentures, but it’s still important to visit your dentist for regular dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist in Chicago Loop will be able to complete a “fit and function” check to make sure your dental restoration is still meeting your needs.

During your appointment, they will check to see that your mouth is still in good condition, complete x-rays, and then deep clean your remaining teeth and gums.
